US CITIZENSHIP ACT OF 2021 to PROVIDE A LEGAL IMMIGRATION PATHWAY
The Democrats and President Biden have announced a new proposed immigration legislation (law) entitled the US Citizenship Act of 2021. This law would immediately grant greencard permanent residency status to those individuals currently with DACA – Dream Act approvals and those individuals who have been granted TPS status (i.e. Salvadorans, Hondurans, Nepal, Nicaragua, Sudan)
The important step is that the US Citizenship Act of 2021 would also provide a legal pathway to those 11 million undocumented persons living and residing inside the United States. They would get their greencards in 5 years and then US citizenship in 3 years for a total of an 8 year program for legal immigration status. The details of what would be required to satisfy acceptance into this program have yet to be worked out by the US Congress; but the basic elements of knowledge of USA laws and civics, the proficiency in the English language and no to minimal criminal record and the proof of payment of income taxes would all presumably be required in the final bill.
Here is hoping that this proposed legislation will garner wide support and maintain momentum to proceed through the Congress and one day soon onto President Biden’s desk for ratification and his Presidential signature. I will watch this and provide contemporaneous updates.
